PERSONAL NOTE: My first visit to Sicily wasn’t magical – not because of the island itself, but because of where I was in life. I was low on energy and simply not ready to take in everything it had to offer.
In the summer of 2021, I decided to go back. Deep down, I knew there was more – that Sicily still held something special for me.
We (my husband and I) began our Italian journey up north, spending a dreamy day with close friends in Venice. One of those film-like days you wish would never end. The next morning, slightly dazed but happy, we headed south to catch the evening ferry from Naples to Palermo.
Everything was on track… until it wasn’t – and by the afternoon, we were seriously behind schedule. We reached the port in Naples with just minutes to spare. I sprinted to the ticket office, heart pounding, trying to sort everything out in record time. And then… we were literally the last car to get on board. The doors closed right behind us! The crew laughed and said, “Be the first to queue tomorrow morning, or we all won’t get off the boat!”
I’m not exactly a morning person, so I barely slept that night – maybe it was the emotions, the stress of being on time, or maybe the excitement about what lay ahead.
But I will never forget the view when morning came. I pulled back the curtains of our cabin and saw soft light spilling across the sea. I felt immediately welcomed – I knew this trip would be different.
That this time, Sicily and I were going to become great friends.
