PERSONAL NOTE: Tucked away in Piazza Mattei, in the heart of my most beloved district of Rome – Quartiere Ebraico – stands one of the city’s most beautiful fountains and my personal favorite: Fontana delle Tartarughe (The Turtle Fountain).
The fountain features four delicate bronze Epheboi – youthful male figures – each gracefully supporting a basin. The most intriguing element, however, is the turtles perched at the top, appearing to climb into that basin. What’s interesting is that these turtles were actually added during a 1658 restoration, becoming the true protagonists of the fountain.
I remember the first time I saw the fountain – it was during a short stop in Rome in 2020. After a surprise aperitivo at a friend’s place who lived nearby, on the famous Via del Portico d’Ottavia, we set off for an evening walk. It was a warm September night, the city wasn’t too crowded, and the atmosphere felt truly special. On our way back, we passed by the fountain, and my heart melted at its beauty.
Now, whenever I’m nearby, I always change my path to pass by the fountain again – just to admire it one more time.
