PERSONAL NOTE: I love discovering places I’ve first seen on screen – and Villa Palagonia was one of them. It was one of Antonioni’s L’Avventura (1960) film locations. Seeing it in real life felt like stepping into a surreal stage set.
Often called “Villa of Monsters” – Palagonia is known for its grotesque sculptures and eccentric architecture. It became infamous under the vision of Prince Ferdinando (in the early 18th century) who filled its gardens with strange figures – mythological creatures, dwarves, animals, and caricatures that blur the line between fantasy and satire.
But what struck me most wasn’t the grotesque – it was the unexpected beauty. The soft afternoon light on an almost hidden corner of the villa’s exterior. That yellow – to me, it’s the definition of Sicilian yellow. A quiet spot that felt calm – so far from the chaos the villa is known for.
This photograph is my way of remembering Villa Palagonia – not through its madness, but through a moment of stillness.
