PERSONAL NOTE: In autumn 2024, I returned to Venice – a city I know well, but this visit felt different. I had planned to stay overnight, hoping to wake up before the city and witness it slowly come to life. It was also my first time in Italy with my daughter, which made the trip meaningful on a personal level.
I had a specific vision in mind: I dreamt of morning fog gently wrapping around gondolas along the Riva degli Schiavoni. But as it often happens, imagination and reality don’t always align. Still, there was magic. After an early cappuccino in a quiet bar filled with locals – postmen, workers, people starting their day – I wandered through the nearly empty streets.
When I reached Piazza San Marco, the sun was still low, the colours soft and muted. The light was delicate, almost painterly. What caught my eye were the large curtains suspended between the columns that frame the square. They swayed gently, adding a sense of intimacy to the monumental space. And that’s when I took the shot. There was no fog. But I didn’t need it anymore – I had found what I was looking for.
